Get trained in community led marine conservation and volunteer to protect endangered sea turtles in the Bay of Bengal, Bangladesh!

 

Save Our Sea and Bangladesh Youth Environmental Initiative (BYEI) are currently inviting applications for voluntary Field Assistant positions at Bay of Bengal Sea Turtle Program for 2016-2017 nesting season.

 

Who can apply?

Spend such a wonderful time with fisher folks and local community.

Anyone interested in protecting marine biodiversity is eligible to apply.

Particularly, if you are an undergraduate, a graduate or post-graduate from any discipline of Earth, Ocean and Environmental sciences, Life Sciences or Social Sciences, it is an opportunity for you to learn and get trained in conservation research and advocacy.

We specially encourage folks from Anthropology, Sociology, Law, Zoology, Mass-communication, Journalism, Tourism or Development Studies background. Volunteers with experience of social-works and skilled in geographic information system (GIS) will get priority in selection.

Your responsibility as volunteer field assistant

Nesting sea turtles in SMI

Once the nesting mother leaves the beach, it’s you who are responsible to protect the eggs and babies.

For this nesting season (2016-17), the priority is to document the existing nesting habitat of sea turtles in Cox’s Bazar coast; with regular activities described as follows;

  • Supporting local communities, local government institutions and Community Based Organizations (CBOs) in in-situ nest protection of sea turtles.
  • Taking part in social survey on turtle egg and meat trade, and related consumer behavior.
  • Engaging tourism companies in turtle conservation and fund raising.

 

Volunteers are expected to help the local youth with conservation activities and taking part in several scientific studies based on their qualifications.

Deadline

Apply within 15th October 2016.

Fees

No fees required. The volunteer team will be responsible for its own travel, food, accommodation and other expenses.

Working period

Selected volunteers will stay assigned on specific tasks from 1st November, 2016 to 30th April 2017.

Main daily tasks of a volunteer field assistant …

Volunteers are mainly responsible for data collection in the field, desk work while stationed in Cox’s Bazar, Chittagong or Dhaka and for helping local community groups to manage in-situ nesting (if any in the designated area).
